Cumbrian hotel keeps illustrious company in its quest for culinary excellence
Windermere’s Storrs Hall Hotel, is keeping some pretty prestigious company, having just been awarded a third AA Rosette for the quality of its food.
The former Georgian villa with its glorious views of shining water and brooding fells is keeping Cumbria’s foodie reputation firmly in the spotlight ranking alongside some of London’s top establishments including; Simon Rogan’s restaurant, Fera at Claridge’s, The Goring, and The Rivea and Bulgari Hotel & Residences.
Storrs is among only 21 properties in the UK to be awarded three rosettes this year, and the only one in the Northwest of England!
The head chef at Storrs Hall, Conor Toomey, has a fairly simple philosophy when it comes to food, and that is to serve the freshest of ingredients, at the highest of quality, featuring seasonal where possible and keeping dishes innovative and exciting.
Ahead of joining the team at Storrs Hall, Conor regained three AA Rosettes at Coworth Park within a year of taking the helm of the restaurant. Prior to his time at Coworth, Conor worked under two Michelin star chef, Michael Wignall, at the Latymer, Pennyhill Park for five years, where he earned his stripes working his way from Chef de Partie, up the position of Sous Chef.
Conor became the Head Chef at Storrs in March 2014, where he has fully embraced the Cumbrian countryside in every sense. Toomey is now busily focussing on putting Storrs Hall back on the culinary map as a destination restaurant, utilising the quality produce that the surrounding countryside is rich in and creating dishes that are complex and rewarding.
The AA noted in their report that Storrs Hall provides ‘’a relaxing setting for Conor Toomey's ingenious modern Lake District cooking. Evenings bring on the choice of a three-course a la carte with extras or a nine-stage taster menu full of vaulting ambition.’’
Conor said on receipt of the award: ‘’I am delighted for Storrs Hall and the team, especially the boys in the kitchen, it is a very proud moment for myself and them as they have worked tirelessly. This is the start of a long journey for Storrs Hall as we all, as a collective team, work to make it the special destination it deserves to be. With the continued support of Sarah Evans, our owners; The Hindles and Exclusive Management, I know we can push on and achieve further goals.’’
Sarah Evans, General Manger at Storrs Hall, said: ‘’We are truly thrilled for Conor and the whole of the Storrs Hall team. We all work with one goal and that is without doubt; for the achievement of our guest’s satisfaction. Onwards and upwards!’’
Ian Stephens, Cumbria Tourism’s Managing Director, said: ‘’Once more it is great to see one of Cumbria’s food establishments keeping such illustrious company. Recognition like this continues to put the Lake District, Cumbria, firmly on the UK’s food map and long may it continue.’’
